A file directory, File Register, is a functional part of the operating system or a tool for system management.
A file directory is used to organize the files created on the partitions of a storage medium and under the directory. In such a file directory, supplementary features are added to the file name, in particular function-typical short names, the file name supplements specified by the user, the starting point of the file, the date and time of the file creation and/or the last editing.
