fibre channel over IP (SAN) (FCIP)

Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) is a tunnelling protocol used in storage networks for connectingFibre Channel storage networks( FC- SAN) via IP networks.

In the FCIP process, FC data is packed into IP packets, transmitted over IP networks, and unpacked at the destination. The extension ports (E ports) of the FC switches are thus extended with the help of a storage router using the IP protocol.

Structure of the FCIP frame

The entire FCIP data frame is composed of an Ethernet header, followed by IP and TCP headers, the FCIP header and the FCP header, which is followed by the SCSI data. Low-cost tunneling can be used to connect storage networks beyond the local site. Fibre Channel over IP is described in RFC 3821.
