fiber optic connector

An FO connector is a detachable connection of two fibers. In order to achieve optimum light transferbetween the two optical fibers, the optical fibers are ground in a specific shape and directly contacted with each other, i.e. optical fiber to optical fiber.

In the case of glass fiber grindings, a distinction is made between lens coupling, plane-ground end-face coupling or oblique-ground bevel coupling. Accordingly, a distinction is made between FO connectors with physical contact, the so-called PC connectors with face contact and ferrule spacing, with oblique ground coupling, lens coupling and the biconical FO connectors.

In the former design, the two polished end faces of the fiber ends are in contact. Transmission loss and light loss due to gap loss are very low. Possible fiber damage can be caused by excessive pressure of the two fiber ends on each other. This cannot happen in the design with end face coupling, since the end faces of the fiber ends do not touch. This is prevented by the installation of spacers. In the oblique-grinding technique, which is used especially in conjunction with single- mode fibers, the ferrule end face is ground by a few degrees. This design measure diverts reflective modes from the fiber into the cladding. The result is a significantly increased return loss. In the biconical connector, the guide is biconically shaped and no guide coupling is used in the lens technique.

In this technique, contact is made via the lenticular ground end face in conjunction with a glass plate. A further development of this technique is the lens connector. This connector has optical lens systems that ensure optimum use of the light energy.
