The name Favicon is a word creation from Favorite Icon.
Such a small icon is also called a website icon, URL icon or bookmark icon and is a scaled-down icon of the symbol character used on the website. It is often displayed in front of the address bar.
Favicons are standardized by the W3C consortium in HTML versions from 2000 onwards. Favicons are only 16 x 16 pixels in size and are only suitable for company logos or other symbols if they can be implemented in a sufficiently striking manner.
