Fast Token Ring was a standardization approach with which a data rate of 100 Mbit/s was to be transmitted via the Token Ring
at theend of the 1980s. For this reason, the standardization body for Fast Token Ring, IEEE 802.12
, attempted to specify a high-speed variant. In addition, IEEE 802.3 had already specified a variant for Token Ring with the 100 Mbit/s activities of 100Base-VG AnyLAN. The 100Base-VG concept, which transmits both frame formats, the Ethernet frame as well as the Token Ring frame, and therefore also has the additional designation AnyLAN, can be understood not only as Fast Ethernet, but also as Fast Token Ring.
