fast packet multiplexing (FPM)

Packet multiplexing comprises all technologies in which data packets are multiplexed. These technologies, which include Fast Packet Multiplexing, have better bandwidth utilization than the well-known multiplexing methods such as time division multiplexing(TDM) or statistical time division multiplexing( STDM).

Fast Packet Multiplexing( FPM) is used to multiplex data packets containing voice or video, synchronous or asynchronous data. With FPM, bandwidth is dynamically allocated to the active channels, resulting in much more efficient bandwidth utilization. to this end, the FPM multiplexer polls all channels for a transmission request at short intervals and then provides the appropriate channel capacity. The data combined in data packets is transmitted to the next multiplexer via the transmission links.

The method uses error correction, which can lead to unacceptable delays for time-critical data. To avoid this, error correction can be suspended for certain applications. As an alternative, the packet size can be reduced.
