fast circuit switching (FCS)

A major disadvantage of classic circuit switching is the relatively long times required to establish and terminate connections. Fast circuit switching (FCS) avoids these disadvantages.

With FCS switching, channels that are not currently required are switched off and the channels that are freed up as a result can be used for other services. With the FCS method, however, it must be ensured that if the switched-off channel requires transmission capacity again, this is also made available to it.

FCS switching can be used for voice transmissions and switches off the channel during pauses in speech or when the communication partner is speaking. Since bottlenecks no longer occur with the available transmission bandwidths, this method has outlived its usefulness.
