In transmission technology, there are procedures with which the transmission rate is automatically adapted to the quality of the transmission link by means of Adaptive Speed Leveling( ASL).

This adaptation function is then activated as soon as the transmission quality on the transmission path changes. If the transmission quality deteriorates, the transmission rate is switched to a lower value. This is referred to as fallback.

If, on the other hand, the transmission quality of the connection improves, the transmission rate is automatically switched back to the original transmission rate or to higher values. This is known as fallforward. These methods are used in modems, among other things.
