failure in time (FIT)

The unit of reliability for components, connectors and systems is Failure In Time (FIT), which is specified in ISO 26262.

A Failure in Time corresponds to a reliability of one failure in 1,000,000,000 hours, or `10^-9` failures per hour. To evaluate the reliability of an overall system, the FIT values of all individual components are added together. The higher the FIT value, the higher the probability of failure. The reliability requirements placed on the components are included in the Safety Integrity Level( SIL).
