instant messaging and presence protocol (IP/IETF) (IMPP)

Instant messaging( IM) is real-time communication of text messages over the Internet. Because the various IM systems were incompatible with each other, the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) standardized the Instant Messaging and Presence Protocol (IMPP) for real-time communication of texts.

The IMPP protocol supports instant messaging (IM) with addressing and authentication capabilities. It also has a presence service that provides information about which communication partners can be reached and whether they are online or offline. In addition, presence technology can be used to create a directory of the desired communication partners and define certain criteria in it. These can be times at which the user is online or offline or only uses certain communication facilities. The IMPP protocol ensures the compatibility of the various presence technologies.
