The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an extensible messaging and presence protocol used for near real-time instant messaging
and presence information. The XMPP protocol is an open standard
thatresulted from the renaming of Jabber
. XMPP resides in the protocol stack
inthe application layer above TCP/IP and occupies port number 5222 in a client-server configuration, port 5269 in server-server concepts, and port 5223 with Secure Socket
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) developed the XMPP protocol from the Jabber protocol and recommends it as the standard protocol for instant messaging. In addition, XMPP also supports web conferencing on the web with multiple users assigned roles. In an extension, XMPP is also used in Internet telephony.
