extended superframe (ESF)

An Extended Superframe (ESF) is a multiframe in DS interfaces. The multiframe is a PDH transmission frame that has been enlarged from 12 to 24 frames with 192 bits

each. The increase in data frame size provides 4 kbit/s for signaling and management, as opposed to the 2 kbit/s in the DS-1 superframe. Unlike its predecessor, the superframe, the extended superframe has cyclic block checking (CRC) and provides bandwidth for a data linkchannel over which data is exchanged between devices, albeit as an out-of-band transmission.
