explicit rate (ATM) (ER)

Explicit Rate(ER) is a data field in the RM cell ofATM.

The Explicit Rate is used to determine the new acceptable transmission rate of the sender for an existing virtual connection. At the beginning of the transmission, the ER rate is set by the data source, for example as Peak Cell Rate( PCR). During transmission, the ER rate can be reduced by components in the ATM network until all network elements can transmit the speed.
