The enterprise routers are the classic routers that have taken on a collapsed backbone function in the larger versions and interconnect any LANs and WANs using a wide variety of protocols. This species will give way to Layer 3 switches due to the focus on Ethernet and IP technology.

The smaller version of the enterprise routers is used for corporate networks with smaller branch offices, where they take over routing in different network architectures such as SNA and also serve to connect different local networks.
