enhanced packet mode (mobile TV) (EPM)

DigitalAudio Broadcast(DAB) knows different data streams for the audio payload and for control data. The audio payload data can be transmitted in streaming or packetized form, i.e. in streaming mode or packet mode.

Since video transmissionfor mobile TV after DVB-H was quite error-prone, two transmission methods with lower error-proneness were developed: Enhanced Streaming Mode( ESM) and Enhanced Packet Mode (EPM).

Enhanced Packet Mode, which is an extension of the DAB stream, is used in T-DMB and in DAB- IPDC. The protocol stack of the ESM protocol has additional error protection mechanisms to better protect the transmitted video files. The EPM method uses interleaving, interleaves the data packets to be transmitted and encodes them with the Reed-Solomon code. On the receiving side, the data packets are interleaved back again.
