enhanced full rate (EFR)

Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) is a substandard for the coding and decoding of voice signals in GSM networks

. The EFR codec increases the voice quality so that it roughly corresponds to the voice quality of the fixed network. The EFR codec has approximately the same data rate as a full rate codec of GSM. The voice codec uses Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction (ACELP) and has a bit rate of 12.2 kbit/s for voice. The EFR method has a high voice quality compared to the full-rate method (FR) and the half-rate method (HR).
