electronic dialing system

The term electronic dialing system (EWS) comes from Siemens and is from the 1960s. It refers to an analog switching system that can be used as an exchange at all hierarchy levels. Depending on the hierarchy level, a letter for local switching or long-distance switching was appended to the acronym. For example, EWSF for long-distance switching, EWSO for local networks or EWSM for city networks.

EWS systems are voice switching systems for analogtelephone networks, the systems for digital ISDN-based switching are called EWSD(digital).
