electronic device description language (EDDL)

The Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) is an internationally standardized description language with which the multitude of parameterization tools in production plants can be reduced.

The aim is to develop uniform procedures for parameterization with a systematic user interface. EDDL is implemented in the electronic descriptions, the Electronic Device Description( EDD), used in the fieldbuses HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer), Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus, and has been standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission( IEC) under IEC 61804-2.

Various automation technology organizations are involved in the activities to create a uniform device description language, such as the OPC Foundation, the committees for Fieldbus, and the Profibus User Organization (PNO), which want to achieve standards-based interoperability for the electronic configuration of field devices.

Comparable activities for the standardization of device descriptions and the parameterization tools are running under Field Device Tool( FDT).
