electromagnetic interference (EMI)

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is an influence on the functionality of circuits, devices, systems and also living beings caused by magnetic and electric fields. These radiations are caused by the alteration of currents.

All electronic devices give off emissions as a result of electromagnetic activity and thus interfere with each other. Causes can also be natural phenomena.

Electromagnetic interference leads, for example, to potential problems, interference in electronic switching circuits in broadcasting equipment and mobile radio or data loss in data processing equipment. Typical sources of radiation are transformers, motors, fluorescent lamps, transmitters, switches, monitors, transmitters, etc. The resistance of devices and cabling to electromagnetic interference is defined in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and is specified in DIN VDE 0843.
