The Electromagnetic Compatibility Act (EMVG) was published in the Federal Law Gazette on 12.11.1992 and came into force immediately. From 01.01.1996, after a transition period, it replaced the Radio Frequency Equipment Act (HFrG) and the Radio Interference Act (FunkStörG). The latest version is dated June 2017.

The EMVG describes the "placing on the market and operation of equipment that can cause electromagnetic interference or whose operation can be impaired by such interference" and gives legal force to the EMC Directive. In addition, however, the law also regulates the responsibilities for its implementation, contains the basis for cost regulations and the handling of technical and legal disputes. The EMVG described here refers exclusively to the German legal sources. In Austria, the EMC Directive of the European Communities is implemented by the Electromagnetic Compatibility Ordinance (EMVV) issued within the framework of the Electrical Engineering Act ( ETG).
