edge gateway (DQDB) (EGW)
An edge gateway(EGW) is an intelligent edge device in edge computing. It is a node computer at the transition between two networks. It can be a connection node between a local network and a metropolitan area network( MAN), or the transition computer between a wide area network and an access network.
Functionally, the gateway takes over the connection of enterprise networks to the core network. Edge gateways support a wide variety of mobile networks, local networks, radio networks and fixed networks to which they interface. They use WiFi and Ethernet over which they can communicate and can aggregate and convert industrial protocols from CAN-Bus, Modbus, BACnet, SCADA or ZigBee.
A typical edge gateway is an IoT gateway located at the transition between the core network and the Internet of Things.
