In electrical power supplies, the earthreference point (ERP) is generally the reference point for the protective earth and the neutral conductor, since they are related to each other in terms of potential.
Under certain conditions, the neutral conductor can also be used for grounding devices. If current flows via the protective earth, dangerous voltages may be present at the enclosure, causing electric shocks when touched. Therefore, when installing protective earth and neutral, the relevant electrical regulations must be strictly observed.
If an enclosure is connected to the neutral, care must be taken to ensure that the voltage level cannot rise above the earth potential.
