drive allocation

To facilitate the identification ofhard diskdrives and other drives by the user or the operating system, in computers the individual drives or partitions of the hard disks are marked with letters. This labeling depends on the operating system.

Under Windows and the DOS operating system, the individual drives are marked consecutively with capital letters, starting with the letter "A" for the first floppy disk drive. If a second floppy drive is present, the letter "B" is reserved for it. The first hard disk drive is marked with "C", further hard disk drives, CD drives or DVD drives and slots for memory cards are assigned the following letters "D", "E", "F" alphabetically.

Under Mac OS, numbers are assigned to the drives.
