Domain sharding is similar to domain splitting. Since browsers limit the number of active connections for each domain, domain sharing splits the content across multiple subdomains.

Domain sharding is about increasing the possible number of active queries. By making content available on multiple subdomains, requesting browsers can download more resources simultaneously. If only one domain provides the resources, the downloading is quite slow because the resources have to be downloaded one after the other. Since domain sharding provides multiple subdomains with content, this results in faster loading times.
