distribution management system (smart grid) (DMS)

The term Distribution Management System(DMS) is used in Smart Grids or in Microgrids for the central component of the control center that monitors, manages and controls the electrical power distribution in power grids. DMS systems manage the power-generating equipment, the energy storage and distribution, and the load management with the control of consumption-oriented customer devices by means of demand response.

Such a DMS system operates with real-time information and provides short-term power restoration, reduced outage times through the Outage Management System( OMS), improved utility reliability, and acceptable frequency and voltage levels.

DMS systems evolved from SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and include other control systems such as Outage Management Systems, as well as communication systems to provide short-term information to maintenance personnel and power customers. DMS systems can interface with other systems and applications, such as Geographic Information Systems( GIS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), or Customer Information Systems( CIS), providing a complete view of distributed operations.
