discontinuous transmission (GSM) (DTX)

Discontinuous Transmission (DTX) is a transmission mode in GSM networks in which no data packets are transmitted during voice pauses.

DTX technology is used in conjunction with voice pause detection( VAD) and switches off data transmission during voice pauses. To prevent the communication partner from being irritated by the silence, a background noise is faded in, the Comfort Noise( CN).

Statistically, a normal conversation consists of 50% speech pauses. DTX technology uses a large part of this potential for more efficient utilization of network capacity and energy savings. In contrast, continuous transmission is when a certain number of data packets are exchanged during a certain time interval.
