digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM)

Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) is a de facto standard format for the worldwide exchange, management and communication of medical and radiological images and their textual description in telemedicine.

Dicom is based on the layers of the OSI reference model and thus supports communication in heterogeneous systems.

DICOM defines specific protocols, the syntax and semantics of transmittable messages, interfaces and communication techniques. It forms the basis for archiving and use in medical databases, the Picture Archiving and Communication System( PACS). Thanks to the communication capability of Dicom files, image-recording and image-processing medical devices can be networked into systems. This allows medical images to be exchanged between hospitals, clinics and practices. Likewise, Dicom files can be exchanged with other systems.
