digital crossconnect system (DCS)

Digital Crossconnect System (DCS) is a high-speed switch for data channels that accepts its own commands for switching, regardless of the data being transmitted.

A Digital Crossconnect System switches digital channels from one device to another in digital telephone networks by establishing cross connections between digital channels.

Digital crossconnect systems exist as Broadband Digital Crossconnect Systems (BDCS) or Wideband Digital Crossconnect Systems (WDCS), which are used as broadband digital switching links in wideband switching systems in ATM networks or SDH. In ATM, virtual paths( VP) are switched via such a switching device.
