digital 8 (D8)

Digital-8 is one of several digital video ( DV) formats developed by Sony that uses the drives and magnetic tapes ofHi8 video.

Digital-8 records a digital component signal with the resolution of720 x 576 pixels, which uses color subsampling 4:2:0 (Europe) and has a quantization of 8 bits. For video compression, Digital-8 relies on JPEG and achieves a compression factor of 5:1. The resulting data rate is 25 Mbps.

Digital-8 is used in camcorders, it is inexpensive, robust and based on a field-proven technology. The Digital-8 recording format is characterized by high brightness and low color resolution.

Analog recordings in Video-8 and Hi8 video can be played back without any problems.
