While RC elements act as filters to change sinusoidal signals in phase and amplitude but not in shape, the same RC elements are used to deformpulses and other non-sinusoidal signals. Hence the name pulse shaper stages. A distinction is made between differentiating elements and integrating elements, both CR and RC elements.

A differentiator, a combination of capacitor and resistor, fulfills the mathematical function of differentiation in which the change of the signal components is transferred. For example, a flat pulse roof of a square wave signal will not result in a differentiated signal, but the rising edge will cause a positive pulse signal and the falling edge will cause a negative pulse signal. Differentiation works only when the pulse duration is much greater than the time constant of the RC element.

Differentiating elements are used to control pulse- or edge-controlled logics and gates.
