device independent bitmap (DIB)

Device Independent Bitmap(DIB) is the device independent variant of the bitmap file format. Bitmap was first developed for Windows only and was device dependent, which led to the name Device Dependent Bitmap( DDB), later the device independent DIB variant was added. This is also called Windows Bitmap.

Device Independent Bitmap is the conventional bitmap file format with the file extension *.bmp, more rarely *.dib.

Device Independent Bitmap can be represented with different color depths of 1, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 bits per pixel( bpp). DIB files consist of the header and the data blocks for the information and image data. They contain a color table for the conversion of the color pixels into the RGB color model, i.e. for light-emitting representations. The file size of DIB files is relatively large compared to compressed graphics files such as those of Portable Network Graphics( PNG) or JPEG, which is related to the fact that DIB files are uncompressed or losslessly compressed with Run Length Encoding( RLE).
