A Designated Router (DR) is a router that is available for specific tasks with the highest priority. In OSPF networks (Open Shortest Path First), such a Designated Router generates the link state for a multi-access network and thus reduces the number of adjacent connections. DR routers ensure the distribution of actuation information within an area, which reduces the Link State Advertisements (LSA) to be transmitted. In addition to the DR router, backup-designated routers (BDR) are also used.
