designated router (DR)

A Designated Router (DR) is a router that is available for specific tasks with the highest priority. In OSPF networks (Open Shortest Path First), such a Designated Router generates the link state for a multi-access network and thus reduces the number of adjacent connections. DR routers ensure the distribution of actuation information within an area, which reduces the Link State Advertisements ( LSA) to be transmitted. In addition to the DR router, backup-designated routers (BDR) are also used.
