Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) is a technology for radio-based and safety-related services performed by mobile stations in automotive applications. DSRC is based on the IEEE802.11p and 1609 Wireless Access for Vehicular Environments(WAVE) standards. The Federal Communications Commission(FCC) had previously designated the 902 MHz to 928 MHz frequency band for DSRC services, later using the 5 GHz frequency range between 5.850 GHz to 5.925 GHz. The frequency range is divided into seven 10 MHz channels, one of which is characterized by high availability and low latency, while others are used for security services and control functions. Due to the higher channel bandwidths, it was also possible to increase the data rates from 500 kbit/s specified in the UHF range to 6 Mbit/s to 27 Mbit/s at a distance of 1,000 meters. Transmission is in half-duplex, either transmitting or receiving. Wireless car-to-car communication(C2C), car-to-roadside communication(C2R), car-to-infrastructure communication(C2I), will be incorporated into the corresponding telematics standards. In addition, DSRC technology can be used in existing consumer electronics technologies and billing systems for road tolls or vehicle maintenance checks.
