Data protection officers (DPOs) are appointed persons who monitor data protection in public authorities and private industry. The function of data protection officer was created by the Federal Data Protection Act(BDSG) and relates to the states and the federal government.

According to the BDSG, there is a Federal Data Protection Officer (BDSB) and data protection officers.

The data protection officer organizes data protection in companies and public authorities, is bound by instructions and is subordinate to the state supervisory authorities for monitoring data protection. The BDSG is responsible for the federal authorities and is the appeal body for citizens who feel that their data protection rights have been infringed.
