data over voice (DOV)

Data over Voice (DOV) is a transmission method in which voice and data are transmitted via the same transmission medium

. In the past, this referred to a telephone cable over which data could be transmitted simultaneously with a telephone call. The DoV process can be done, for example, by splitting frequency bands, as in xDSL processes, or by transmitting data during pauses in speech, as in voice pause detection. Another method in which frequency ranges below the voice range are used for the transmission of data is called Data Under Voice (DUV).
