Data management (DM) includes the capture of data
, processing, administration, archiving and output. This includes the organization of data with search and query functions. Other functional fields include data output, reorganization of data stocks or storage media, functions for recovering data and preventive procedures for restarting
after system interruptions. Modern data management takes the life cycle of data into account for all functions.
During this time, data has different requirements for its protection, disk performance, storage media, and management. These lifecycle characteristics are partially taken into account in Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM), and more comprehensively in Information Lifecycle Management (ILM).
