Dark data is data that is collected and stored by computers but not used. Depending on the company structure, a lot of data is collected but not analyzed. It is simply stored without even knowing
that it exists. For example, in industrial applications, a lot of data is generated by sensors
that isnot needed or used as operational or measurement data. Some companies assume that dark data, although not currently used, may be of interest for future applications or analyses. The
storage of dark data is ultimately also related to the fact that storage space plays a subordinate role in terms of investment and one therefore collects and stores data, even if it is not currently used, for possible future applications. It is also seen as an economic factor that could be of interest in the future, especially since interesting business information could be obtained from the dark data via a Big Data analysis.
