counter mode (CTR)

Counter Mode (CTR) is an encryption method that converts block ciphers into stream ciphers

. In the counter mode procedure, a key stream is generated that encrypts the successive values of a counter. Any function that has no repetition for a longer period of time can be used as a counter, for example a counter that increments by the value 1. However, such simple incremental counters provide less encryption security.
