Copyfree is one of several concepts for copying, using, modifying, further developing and distributing third-party software. This concept is in contrast to copyright, the intellectual property right, and is to be seen as a complement to copyleft, which does not restrict the rights of the owner in any way.

With Copyfree, there is no monopoly right to the intellectual property as with copyright, nor is it subject to any regulations on distribution as Copyleft is. There are principles that give the owner rights of control.

Copyfree licensing requires that the original software and its modifications may be distributed under the same conditions. These rules are laid down in the Copyfree Standard Definition (CSD) of the Copyfree Initiative.
