computer aided manufacturing (CAM)

Computer-aided manufacturing(CAM) is part of the CIM concept and stands for production with computer-aided machining equipment. It is the computer support and monitoring of operating equipment in the manufacturing process.

Computer-aided manufacturing encompasses all production engineering processes from input to machining to machine control. The core of computer-aided manufacturing is the NC program, which resembles a normal program and is written in ASCII. The computer converts the program code step by step into the tool movements. The CAM program can be used to create the desired workpiece from a blank using electronically controlled machine tools( CNC).

CAM processes can receive their data directly from computer-aided design( CAD). The products designed in CAD systems are converted in the CAM systems to suit the machine and used to control NC or CNC systems.
