companding

Companding is a neologism made up of compression and expansion. In this process used in PCM technology, the signal is non-linearly compressed before transmission and non-linearly expanded again after reception. This ensures that signals with a wide dynamic range can be transmitted over connections with comparatively limited bandwidth.
