Compact HyperText Markup Language (CHTML) is a subset of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) for the mobile Internet. CHTML was developed by the W3C consortium
in the 1990s and has a limited feature set. For example, it is designed for small memory, low-power central processing units, monochromatic displays, one font, and limited input capabilities. Only the GIF format is available for graphic representations. It has limited display capabilities that cannot display tables, images
, or background colors and images. CHTML has a limited command set and can interpret many of the commands and tags of HTML, allowing normal web pages to be adopted for display on mobile devices with few changes. CHTML was and is used in mobile phones, PDAs and older smartphones.
