Messaging is part of communication and is used to transmit messages and information from a message source, the sender, over a transmission link to one or more message receivers.

A message can be exchanged between two communication partners, as in unicast, it can take place from a message source to a group of message receivers, as in multicast, or as a broadcast from a message source to any number of subscribers, as is the case with radio or television. Message exchange can take place in only one direction from the message source to the message sink, which is simplex transmission, but message exchange can equally take place in duplex in both directions simultaneously.

The multi-faceted message technology includes the preparation of messages for transmission, the transmission itself, and the receiving technical preparation, so that the receiving stations can also interpret the messages.

The way messages are prepared essentially depends on the transmission medium and thus on whether the messages are transmitted via wired transmission media or wirelessly using radio technology.

When analog signals are transmitted, they are transmitted modulated or unmodulated over the transmission medium. Digital signals can be compressed and encoded before they are placed on the transmission medium with coding and modulation.
