A code element is the smallest part of a codeword that can take on two or more different values. A code element is specified by the number of discrete stages or states. A code element with 2 states is called binary, with 3 states ternary, with 4 states quaternary, with 5 states quinary, with 6 states senary, with 7 states septenary, with 8 states octonary, with 9 states novonary, with 10 states denary, and with n states n-nary.
