clipping

Clipping has something to do with cutting and cropping and is used in a wide variety of applications.

  1. Incolor imaging, clipping is about reducing colors or cutting out visible objects, in video to cut together a shorter video clip, and in websites as web clipping to reduce the size of web pages.
  2. In computer graphics, clipping stands for the elimination of geometric objects that are assigned to a specific visible area. Clipping can be used to cut out from a computer graphic the area or geometric object that is relevant for display or further processing. The drawing tools of the graphics programs then act only on this area. Cliparts are cut-out symbols, drawings of devices or illustrations that are stored as a collection and can be called up as needed to create graphics. Clipart can be in vector and bitmap file format and is usually not subject to copyright.
  3. In audio, clipping is the limiting of gain or overdriving. When amplifiers are overdriven, the active components enter their non-linear characteristic ranges and clip the level values above them. In analog amplifiers, this causes distortion. In addition to this limiting clipping, audio technology also knows peak clipping and audioclipping. Peak clipping is used in hearing aids and limits the sound pressure, while audio clipping is used to search for keywords in spoken texts in radio and television broadcasts.
