cleaver
Cleaver translates as cleaver and chopper. A cleaver is a fiber cutting tool for cutting glass fibers. In this context, it is also referred to as a fiber cleaver or cleaving tool.
Glass is cut by scribing and breaking. When splicingoptical fib ers, the break must be perpendicular to the fiber axis and exceptionally smooth to minimize reflection and attenuation in the splice. Special tools, called cleavers, are available for this cutting.
Cleavers can look like pliers or as a small cutting station with a clamping device. They use diamonds, sapphires or tungsten carbide as cutting tools. The fiberglass under tension is scored with the cutting tool and then broken. The breaking point is extremely smooth and has the desired surface.
