circuit switched fallback (CSFB)

Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) is a technique for Voice over LTE( VoLTE). This procedure has been standardized by 3GPP and essentially uses various processes and network elements to establish a connection for voice transmission over a 2nd generation( 2G) or 3rd generation( 3G) mobile network, before any circuit switching has been initiated.

The voice connection is established via a GSM connection or via UMTS. As soon as the subscriber logs on to the LTE network, a log-on to the GSM or UMTS network takes place simultaneously.

The subscriber receives a call signal from the Mobility Management Entity( MME). The circuit-switched connection can then be established from the device. However, the connection setup takes some time. The CSFB specifications require modifications to the network elements, specifically the mobile switching center. The modifications to the mobile switching center are also required for transmission from the short message service.
