Like netiquette, chatiquette describes the rules of conduct for users in chat.

These rules of conduct have evolved over the years and include instructions on how users should behave in chat and what behavior other chat participants expect from them. These unwritten rules include forms of address, labeling, how to handle and publish private details, how to distinguish between public and private messages, and how to express certain moods.

Chatiquette ensures that virtual communication between chat participants takes place as smoothly as possible and without misunderstandings.
