characters per second (cps)

The characteristic value Characters per Second (cps) is the dimension for the character speed. On the one hand, this refers to how many characters can be transmitted over a connection in one second, and on the other hand, how many characters a printer can print in one second.

As a transmission speed, the cps value indicates how many characters can be transported over the network in one second. The value is therefore the transport capacity of a communication system, including the overhead. All transmitted characters are included in the "characters per second" value: User data as well as parity or control bits.

The printing speed of needle and inkjet printers was also specified in characters per second (cps). However, since these are exclusively text characters, this specification is no longer used for printers.
