Characterstuffing is the insertion of additional control characters to avoid misinterpretation by transmitted data
. For this purpose
, theswitch characters, Data Link Escape (DLE), are each doubled by inserting (stuffing) another DLE. This is very likely to avoid errors
thatmainly occur when binary data is transmitted.
However, the tight binding to the byte mode and the ASCII characters make this method seem questionable with evolving network technology, so that bit stuffing is being used more and more.
