cell switching

Cell switching is an asynchronous time division multiplex (ATD) in which data packets of fixed length, so-called cells

, are transmitted in the form of information units. The cells are transported in the switching network of a switching system in which direct switching of the cells between input and output ports takes place. Cell switching is one of three methods for LAN switching. It has the advantage that it is implemented in hardware and thus has extremely short switching and delay times. In addition, cell switching is characterized by simple runtime control. Cell switching is used for Frame Relay (FR) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), among others.
